COMMENTORY
My name is Emily Bromley and this is my video
commentary about the styles, conventions and techniques of music videos.
Styles:
I will be firstly talking about styles. Each
different music genre will have a different style. For example, pop videos will
be more likely have bright colours whereas a rap video will be more likely have
darker colours.
So as an example Megan Traniors song all about the
base includes, lip syncing, and is as live, cutting to the beat which is seen u
a lot of pop music videos.
As live:
A lot of pop artists use the as live format for
their video as they are normally high budget.
In concert:
A lot of indie artists use the in-concert format
for their music videos as it is cheaper to produce as they may not have a high
budget to produce high quality narrative music videos. An example of an in
concert video is Imagine Dragons Demons which includes footage from their show,
but then it also includes scenes which are as live.
Animation:
An example of a digital animation music video is
Junior Senior – Move your Feet. In this video I has a lot of cutting to the beat includes lip
syncing. Animated videos are normally used to experiment with different story
telling techniques
Interpretative:
An interpretative music video encourages the
audience to speculate the music video and find a deeper meaning. An example of
this is Sias elastic heart as the video is very simple as it is two people dancing
in the cage but with the music there is a room for interpation as each viewr
could have a different idea of what the video is about.
Illustrative:
An illustrative music video is one which uses the
lyrics in the song for the basis, an example of this is Madonna – papa don’t
preach as it uses the lyrics to show visuals. It tells a story with the lyrics
about her father which is shown in the music video.
Narrative:
A music video with a narrative is a video which has
a story in the video. An example of a narrative is taylor swift you belong with
as it is telling a story about a girl who likes a boy yet the boy is taken.
Also in this video it has a lot of lip syncing.
Impressionist:
An impressionist music video is where the video
contains unrelated shots which are normally linked with the lyrics and the
visuals an example of this is young the giant cough syrup.
Surrealist:
A surrealist music video is an art movement which
aims to break down the boundaries.
Intertextuality:
Intertextuality is where a type of media refers to
another type of media. There are three forms of intertextuality which are
referencing pastiche parody and homage.

Homage:
Homage is a type of music video which pay tribute
to another form of media, this could be to or a film etc. an example of a
homage music video is Thirty Seconds to Mars the kill, which is a tribute to
the horror film The Shinning
Pastiche:
A pastiche music video is where it imitates the
style of a character of one more other artists/time/ periods in a way which
celebrates the imitated text.
An example of this is Madonna’s music video vogue
has it takes inspiration from the 1920’s and 1930’s.
Parody:
Parody music videos are very similar to pastiche
where it imitates another music video but the difference with parody is that
its purpose is to mock. An example of a parody music video is Eminems music
video We Made You to which is mocking the celebrity life style.
